Friends of Karura Forest
Kenya’s Karura Forest Reserve is a community-based conservation effort that since the inception of the Friends of Karura Community Forest Association (FKF) in 2009 has transformed the 1,000 ha urban water catchment from a no-go danger zone with literally zero visitors a year, to a prime observation forest attraction with over 30,000 visitors a month, 75% of whom are Kenya citizens. Karura is ranked as #2 out of over 100 attractions in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital city. Working hand-in-hand with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), FKF aims to return one of the world’s largest urban forests to an original upland forest ecosystem (to date achieving 50% indigenous tree cover, up from 25% in 2009)
