Time for Restoration

This is the second Earth Day celebration that we have spent under the shadow of the Covid-19 Pandemic. The toll of our challenges in this present time, with over 3 million deaths worldwide, makes it hard for us to think about the other crisis which continues unabated, the one for which there is no vaccine, the climate crisis. Today on Earth Day, we are invited to make the time to think about this one planet where we all live.

The theme for this year’s Earth Day is “Restore Our Earth” which focuses on natural processes and emerging green technologies that can restore the world’s ecosystems. In this way, the theme rejects the notion that mitigation or adaptation are the only ways to address climate change.

REFLECT

We, at the Network of African Women Environmentalists (NAWE) have been creating the time since Earth Day Last year, to connect online through the Earth Science Cafes, bringing our community of climate change advocates together to reflect on the moment we are in and the conversations have continued through our Earth Reflections podcasts, where we are sharing strategies to build forward stronger.

RESTORE

We have a vision of restoration, a time when African women can apply the technology, indigenous knowledge and innovations that are widely available, to participate fully in this Decade that on Ecosystems Restoration.

We mobilized our Youth at NAWE, our Landscape Guardians
The Urban Warrior Elizabeth Wathuti,
The Global Advocate Vanessa Nakate,
The Green Entreprenur Siya Sokomani,
The Good Steward Allen Ottaro and
The dynamic Ecofeminist Oladosu Adenike.

Together they are leading our campaign to encourage people to “Adopt a Landscape” and connect all these small contributions to create a mosaic of power for a restored earth.

REIMAGINE

And what will happen when we get tp 2030? That magical margin that opens the doors to our future prosperity? Who knows……but at NAWE we’re working to design pathways towards many possible preferred futures. We’re bringing together communities around the continent to reimagine and develop action plans for our green recovery in a post covid world.

It’s time for action now. The NAWE 4 Point Agenda for Action is a map of our journey ahead.
– Activating the Data Revolution for Ecosystems Restoration.
– Accelerating Uptake of Technology and Innovation for Climate Smart Agriculture.
– Advancing Financial Inclusion for Women across Agricultural Value Chains.
– Aggregating human capital for green jobs, allied to indigenous knowledge for food systems innovations.
